Rock bits, chosen by the formation
A rock bit is chosen for the rock it has to cut. Our tricone bits come in four diameters from 5½″ to 6¾″, each in several IADC grades, so the same hole size can be drilled in soft, medium or hard formations with the right bit.
A tricone bit has three rolling cones that crush and chip the rock as the bit turns. Milled-tooth bits have steel teeth cut into the cones; TCI bits carry pressed-in tungsten-carbide inserts and are the choice for harder and more abrasive rock. The 7⅞″ PDC bit has no moving parts — fixed cutters shear the rock instead of crushing it.
The three-digit IADC code says what a tricone bit is made for. The first digit is the cutting structure and the formation: 1–3 are milled-tooth bits, 4–8 are TCI bits, and the higher the number, the harder the rock. The second digit grades the hardness within that series, from 1 to 4. The third digit is the bearing — every bit here ends in 7, a sealed friction bearing with gauge protection.
